Christmas cribs in Helsinki, 2011

Good does not intrude. It lowers the threshold and allows one to enter when the time is right.

The door of goodness stands wide open. Even the distrust of someone with a measuring rod does not close it. Step in, if you want to.

Inside, the old and familiar will mix its colours with the unexpected, unknown as yet to anybody.

Christmas cribs from different parts of the world will be displayed in the shop windows in Helsinki city centre during the Advent season. This year, the focus of the event is pulling down barriers and building up peace: there is enough of this goodness for everyone.

The depiction of the Nativity with puppets, illustrations or sculptures is an age-old Christian tradition. The christmas cribs are tours-de-force of artisans from various regions, reflecting the different times of their creation and showing distinctive regional features.

“The Christmas cribs in Helsinki" event is organised by the Lutheran, Orthodox and Catholic parishes of Helsinki in co-operation with local companies. The Christmas cribs are part of Catholic and Lutheran tradition. The Orthodox community will organise an exhibition of icons illustrating the Christmas theme.

The displayed Christmas cribs are the property of  private persons and parishes. The Christmas crib constellations have been set up by Pia Niemi. Texts - Kaisa Raittila.

Each and everyone is welcome
